Mark Budensiek — Partner

Mark Budensiek is a partner at Klatte, Budensiek & Young-Agriesti, LLP, heading up the firm’s employment law counseling practice and providing clients with personalized care focusing on the practice of “preventive employment law.” His approach of working with clients before litigation arises to minimize legal exposure in employment matters has saved many employers from falling into the expensive legal snares for which California employment law is famous.

Mr. Budensiek works in close partnership with California employers of all sizes, from start-ups to international corporations, becoming an integral part of his clients’ human resources organization and serving as a trusted advisor to company owners and senior managers on issues involving their employees. His clients each benefit from his insightful, business-oriented advice on employee hire and separation, wage and hour compliance, internal investigations and other sensitive matters.

Mr. Budensiek plays an instrumental role in developing employment policies and practices designed to comply with California’s demanding employment and wage/hour laws, especially emphasizing service to companies headquartered outside of California who are often unfamiliar with the state’s complex compliance requirements. In addition to employment law counseling and related projects, Mr. Budensiek represents employers in employment-related investigations or hearings before state and federal administrative agencies. An experienced and engaging public speaker, Mr. Budensiek also trains management-level human resources employees and company supervisors in employment law compliance best practices.

Mr. Budensiek's educational background in Human Resources Management and years of leadership experience in the U.S. armed forces are an invaluable complement to his practice. He knows what it is like to have employees working for him--and to deal successfully with the challenges that can bring. He also brings his deep knowledge of employment law to the classroom as an adjunct professor, teaching in employment law at Chapman University’s Dale E. Fowler School of Law.

Mr. Budensiek earned his undergraduate degree in Human Resources Management with high distinction from the University of Iowa. Stanford Law School awarded him a law degree with distinction while he was serving on active duty as a U.S. Naval officer. After law school graduation, Mr. Budensiek continued to serve as an officer in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps, both on active duty and later as a reservist, until retiring from the Navy in 2006.
